As nurses and healthcare workers, we give so much of ourselves—mentally, physically, and emotionally—every shift. After hours on your feet, managing high-stress situations, lifting equipment and managing patients, it’s not just nice to unwind at home—it’s essential.
In this post, I’m sharing six of my favourite relaxation must-have products to help you recover, recharge, and protect your body after work. Whether you’re ready to splurge on luxury self-care or looking for budget-friendly relief, these picks are nurse-approved and shift-tested.
💡 Why You Need to Prioritize De-Stressing After Work
Nursing isn’t just physically demanding—it’s neurologically and emotionally taxing too. The stress response you experience during high-pressure shifts can have cumulative effects on your physical and mental health if it’s not properly addressed after work. Here’s why making time to de-stress isn’t optional—it’s clinical self-preservation.
🧠 1. Reduce Chronic Stress & Cortisol Overload
During high-stakes clinical situations, your body produces adrenaline and cortisol. While helpful in the moment, prolonged elevation of cortisol is linked to:
- Sleep disturbances and insomnia
- Increased anxiety and depression
- Impaired memory and concentration
- Immune system suppression
📃 Studies show that nurses with prolonged elevated cortisol levels are at greater risk of burnout and mood disorders.
Intentional relaxation practices—like soaking, massage, or aromatherapy—can help re-balance your nervous system and lower cortisol levels post-shift.
💪 2. Prevent Musculoskeletal Injury & Back Pain
According to NHS Digital and the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), nurses and healthcare assistants experience some of the highest rates of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the lower back, due to repetitive lifting, awkward patient handling, and prolonged standing.
📃 HSE reports that over 500,000 UK workers suffer from work-related musculoskeletal conditions, with healthcare support staff among the top affected occupations.
These injuries are often cumulative—and worsened when muscle fatigue and inflammation aren’t managed after shifts.
By using at-home tools like back massagers, foot spas, or Epsom salt baths, you can:
- Reduce muscle tightness
- Improve blood circulation
- Speed recovery and reduce your risk of injury
📃 Taking care of your back at home isn’t just a comfort measure—it’s an injury prevention strategy backed by NHS occupational health guidance.
💤 3. Support Better Sleep & Recovery
Sleep is where both cognitive and physical repair takes place. If you’re coming home wired and overstimulated, falling asleep (or staying asleep) becomes difficult—especially for night-shift nurses with disrupted circadian rhythms.
Using sensory-based relaxation products like eye massagers or essential oil diffusers helps:
- Signal your nervous system that it’s time to rest
- Promote melatonin production
- Improve overall sleep quality and duration
📃 Even short-term improvements in sleep can lead to measurable boosts in immune response and reduced fatigue.
❤️ 4. Protect Your Mental Health
Burnout, compassion fatigue, and emotional exhaustion are endemic in nursing. Decompressing emotionally isn’t a luxury—it’s necessary to maintain empathy, focus, and resilience on the job.
Daily recovery rituals—no matter how small—can reduce symptoms of:
- Emotional detachment
- Irritability and mood swings
- Mental fatigue and cognitive fog
🥛 You can’t pour from an empty cup. Replenishing yourself is a professional responsibility as much as a personal need.

1. 💦 Lazy Spa Hot Tub
After a brutal shift, soaking in a warm, bubbling tub can feel like a full-body reset. The Lazy Spa is inflatable, easy to maintain, and provides gentle hydrotherapy that reduces inflammation and muscle tension.
✅ Ideal for easing sore legs, hips, and back

💡My opinion- After a long stressful shift there is nothing more relaxing then having half an hour sitting in the hot tub to de-stress. I specifically looked into purchasing a hydro-jet hot tub as the jets are powerful, positional and effective. It feels like a shiatsu massage for the back and legs, anytime you need it. The heat is perfect for muscle strain and the additional air-jets work to create better circulation for the body. I understand it is exceptionally more money to purchase a hot tub, in the short term, over having massages by a masseuse or buying other massage products. However, I feel it is worth it with the ease of access and will work out cheaper in the long term. I struggle with back pain and I couldn’t do without the hot tub now!
2. 👁 Renpho Eyeris Eye Massager
This heated, Bluetooth-enabled massager targets eye strain and tension headaches—perfect for decompressing after charting under hospital lights all day.
✅ Great for night-shift workers and migraine sufferers

💡My opinion- I suffer from headaches regularly and rushing around on shift exacerbates them. Symptoms range from intense throbbing pain to my forehead and sharp stabbing pain behind the eyes. This is why I decided to try out the eye massager. Instantly reduces the pain without the need for taking medication- which was initially the only solution. Being light weight and portable is handy in case it is needed at work or away from home. The added feature of music is soothing and brilliant for listening to meditation/mindfulness podcasts!
3. 🌿 NEOM Wellbeing Pod Essential Oil Diffuser
This chic diffuser fills your space with calming essential oils—like lavender or eucalyptus—and is beautifully designed for both aesthetics and function.
✅ Helps create a soothing sleep routine
🔗 Try the NEOM Pod Diffuser →
💡My opinion- This isn’t just your normal diffuser but a beautifully designed product to help you sleep and boost your mood. The scents genuinely last all day in my house unlike regular diffusers I have used in the past. It also provides a gentle light with a warm glow when needed. Safer option than candles, especially if you have young children. I recommend using the lavender oil for an easy and relaxing way to fall asleep.
💸 Budget-Friendly Recovery Options That Still Work Wonders
1. 💺 Homedics ShiatsuMax 2.0 Back Massager
This back massager fits easily onto any chair and offers heated, deep-kneading relief after lifting, bending, and standing all shift.
✅ Protect your spine and release tension without needing a full-body massage
🔗 Shop the Homedics ShiatsuMax →
💡My opinion- If the hot tub is too much out of reach for you, the shiatsumax back massager is the next best thing. I found it was perfect due to its practicality of use. I could use it on the sofa of a evening while I watch TV, at the dinner table or in the office when catching up on admin jobs. It really works by moving up and down the spine and even massagers the neck too. Heat can be added and vibration if chosen. It is a snippet of the price compared to the hot tub and definitely a solid investment if you suffer from back pain.
2. 🦶 Sensio Foot Spa Massager
Give your overworked feet some well-earned love with warm water jets and vibrating foot massage. It’s a simple but powerful way to wind down.
✅ Soothes plantar fasciitis, reduces swelling
🔗 Relax with the Sensio Foot Spa →
💡My opinion- Being on your feet for 12+ hours a day or night can have a devastating affect on the feet. Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that can accumulate suddenly or gradually develop overtime- so it is important to look after your feet. The pain and swelling that develops can be extremely intense so using the foot spa has been really effective. The bubbles gently massage and create good circulation to the feet. Hot water reduces the pain and the bonus of rollers underneath allows for extra sensory pressure.
3. 🛁 Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salts – Lavender
A staple in any nurse’s bathroom. Epsom salt soaks reduce inflammation and improve sleep, while lavender calms the mind.
✅ Inexpensive and easy to use nightly
🔗 Buy Dr. Teal’s Lavender Soak →
💡My opinion- My end of work routine when I am home is to wind down in a hot bath. I regularly used bath bombs and scented salts. Epsom salts have been essential to my recovery from work. They create a beautiful smell, especially the lavender scent, aids to relax my muscles and allows me to switch off when falling asleep easier. The 3kg bag is good value for money and a cheap alternative if pay day is looking to far away!
